About Us

Katie Clayton

Who We Are

Elegance Dance Cheshire is owned by Katie Clayton (AB., ACS.), a professional Ballroom Dance teacher, registered with the International Dance Teachers Association (IDTA) and the Guild of Professional Teachers of Dance and Movement to Music and Dramatic Arts (GPTD).

Katie started dancing as a young child; learning Ballet, Modern and Contemporary, and then progressing to Ballroom and Latin, where she worked her way up through amateur medal tests, and the odd competition. After taking a break from dance to have a family, Katie returned to the studio to gain her professional qualifications under one of the IDTA’s most highly qualified and experienced teachers, adjudicators and examiners, Peter Bailey. During her studies, Katie won the prestigious IDTA “W.J. Tasker Pre-Associate of the Year Award” for both Ballroom and Classical Sequence.

Having taught both adult and children’s classes for Peter for a number of years, Katie decided to step out onto her own two (dancing) feet and founded Elegance Dance Cheshire, with the sole purpose of making classes fun for everyone who wants to learn to “move to music”.

Our Purpose

At Elegance Dance Cheshire our aim is to create a fun, sociable environment in which to learn a new skill and meet new people. Group classes are specifically aimed at adult social dancers. We teach the standard Ballroom & Latin dances, popular Classical and Modern Sequence dances, and even a few added extras such as Bachata, Salsa, and Charleston.

There is no pressure in our classes to be perfect! We're not focused on training the next "Strictly" professional, or making you do every step according to the technique book. That's not to say we won't have a look at some of the fundamentals of each dance to enhance our knowledge and ability, but we focus on making classes fun for everyone's ability, and giving you confidence to go out and enjoy dancing!

FAQ's

No. We do teach the dances as partner dances, split down into leader and follower steps, but you don’t need to have a partner at all. You decide whether you want to learn as a leader or a follower, or maybe both. Whatever you are comfortable with is fine by us. Who knows, you may even meet a fellow solo dancer and decide to form a partnership, but that’s entirely up to you.

Anything that is comfortable. Bear in mind that you can get hot whilst dancing so layers are always a good idea. Avoid rubber soled shoes as they can ‘stick’ to the floor and make some steps more difficult. You absolutely don’t need proper dance shoes; in fact, we highly recommend you don’t purchase any until you are sure this is the right hobby for you.

Yes! We all have other commitments, and sometimes life just gets in the way. We do recap steps in lessons. Learning is a fluid process and even if you come every week, you may find some dances easier to pick up than others. The most important thing is to start.

Yes, and what makes it so good is that it is low impact. We all have those little aches and pains (especially as we get older), but dancing keeps you mobile. If you have any ongoing medical issues then consult a medical professional before starting, and please do make us aware before your lesson. It’s fine if you need to sit out a certain dance or adapt steps to what you can physically manage.

And dancing is excellent for mental health as well. It might give you something new to focus on, provide a distraction, and is a great way to meet new people with a shared interest.
